Pico is designed to work seamlessly with Mailchimp; however, one aspect of Mailchimp – its required footer content – needs to be changed in order to avoid readers unintentionally disabling all communication with you when they only intend to unsubscribe from one type of communication or another.

The default Mailchimp footer content

By law, Mailchimp is required to include their own "unsubscribe" link in the footer of all emails campaigns sent through their platform. Your default Mailchimp footer language likely looks something like this:

The problem: When a reader clicks the unsubscribe link, it sends them to a Mailchimp-generated form, which if the reader uses, will prevent them from receiving any emails sent via the Pico-linked Mailchimp list. Another potential issue is that a subscriber may think that clicking on this link stops their actively recurring subscription payment.

Editing the Mailchimp footer content

You can edit the footer content for each of your email templates by scrolling to the bottom of your template and clicking the 'edit pencil' for the footer (see animation below):

Here is the text in the template (with all the requisite Mailchimp merge tags):

You can edit this footer content as much as you like, as long as the *|UNSUB|* tag is either directly in the text or contained in a hyperlink with different display language (using the keyboard shortcut "CMD+K" / "CTRL+K"), as shown above.

Note that the *|UPDATE_PROFILE|* merge tag (used in the "update your preferences" hyperlink above) is not required by Mailchimp.

Recommended footer content edits for Pico compatibility

Default in Mailchimp:  'Want to change how you receive these emails? You can update your preferences or unsubscribe from this list.'

Recommended by Pico (if you don't offer paid subscriptions):  'Want to change how you receive these emails? You can update your preferences or permanently unsubscribe from all communication and newsletters from [your publication name].'

Recommended by Pico (if you offer paid subscriptions): 'To manage your payment to [your publication name], you can access your account options on our site at any time.To change how you receive these emails, you can update your preferences or permanently unsubscribe from all communication and newsletters from [your publication name].'

For the "update your preferences" hyperlink, we recommend inserting your Manage Newsletters Menu Link.

For the "access your account options" hyperlink, we recommend inserting your Manage Payment Menu Link.

Check out the Menu Links article for more information. And for more on the topic of unsubscribing, see Mailchimp's help article on the unsubscribe merge tag as well as this article about editing the footer content block in your campaign templates.
